Photos of Chiang Mai

We’re playing catch-up with some photos! We’ve been in Chiang Mai for 2 months now, and we’ve taken so many (hundreds!) of photos that haven’t made it to the blog.

We’ve decided that we’ll do a few posts that are largely photos of things we’ve seen and loved and took pictures of to help remind us of them.

Hope you enjoy!

Flowers

As of the day I’m writing this post, it’s February 13th, and it’s still almost impossible to grasp that! If we were home, we’d be so used to snow right now, but Chiang Mai is still in bloom. There are trees and bushes, and pots, and trees and bushes *in* pots! Flowers over rooftops and fences and trellises, and planted around trees. Flowers everywhere!

(Actually, the Chiang Mai Flower Festival was held over the past weekend, and we’ve got so many photos of that to share with you! But here are some photos we’ve taken of flowers since we arrived here on December 14).

Animals

There are so many different species of birds here, but this little guy was fascinating because of his tail feathers…still haven’t identified him, yet. We couldn’t get a photo in flight, but here he is with his catch.

We never know when we’ll come across animals. We hear chickens and roosters frequently, but don’t often see them loose; they’re generally kept behind fences in yards, cages, or at times it sounds like in houses! We came across these guys roaming the grounds at one of the temples.

Temples

There are so many temples around Old City! We still haven’t come across many of them, and we wander on foot every day or night for hours. They vary in ornateness from quite fancy (nothing in comparison to the extreme of the mosaiced wats of Bangkok, though, that we’ve seen yet!) to fairly simple.

Although they’re incredibly pretty in the daytime with the sun glittering off the gold and tile, we almost prefer to see the temples at night! They just seem more dramatic, especially the statues. Check out the paving in front of the first wat!

There are small shrines in front of many (if not most!) of the homes and businesses in Thailand, and we often see stray animals sitting on the bases at night.

Night Moat

We’ve posted moat photos before, but it’s just so pretty! Here are another couple of views of the wall surrounding Old City reflected in the moat.

The Vegan Society Cafe and Restaurant

We realized that, of all the photos and restaurants we’ve mentioned, we’ve never actually posted any of one of our favorite restaurants in Old City, Chiang Mai…The Vegan Society. It’s less than a 5 minute walk from our apartment, and we’re definitely regulars! It’s owned and operated by Sarah, who is the sweetest person you could meet and an amazing cook. An order of food absolutely loads a plate; we usually end up splitting a meal! To the Left is one of our favorite alleys…it’s a small soi (or side-street) leading to Sarah’s restaurant. We could probably walk there blindfolded by now, and we’ve definitely spent hours there!

Miscellaneous

We wander so much that sometimes we can’t remember where we’ve been! We saw this mural *somewhere* in Chiang Mai, but haven’t come across it again. It’s incredibly pretty, though.

And this is just a pretty backyard that we pass fairly frequently. Lanterns are popular here!

And, here’s a random elephant statue! There are also a lot of statues here 🙂

Hope you enjoyed the photos! We’ll try to add a new post shortly showcasing last weekend’s amazing Flower Festival.
